More than half the residents of Alhambra are of Asian descent, and the city is one of the centers of Chinese American life in the San Gabriel Valley. Valley Boulevard is lined for miles with noodle houses, dumpling shops, bakeries and tea rooms. The Hat, a pastrami stand that opened at Garfield and Valley in 1951, is a local landmark of a different kind.
